In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna reveals the essence of selfless giving, highlighting that the highest form of charity is that which is offered without any expectation of reward or recognition. He teaches:

दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे |
देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् ||

“Charity given to a worthy person simply because it is right to give, without expecting anything in return, at the right time and in the right place, is said to be in the mode of goodness.” (Bhagavad Gita 17.20)
